Day 170

By Brian Hancock

It looks like in the next 24 hours we are going to be able to wrap up Leg 3 and put a bow around it. Translated 9 are within spitting distance of Punta del Este, and while the wind is flummoxing (nautical term) like your great aunt after a heavy Christmas lunch, they have just 150 miles to go and are doing 7 knots. By my calculations by this time tomorrow they will stern-to at the Yacht Club Punta del Este and bellied up to the bar looking for something to ease them back onto life on land while they prepare to get ready to go back out to sea. No one said that this was going to be an easy race, but the team have taken it all with a smile on their face. They have headwinds but remember, they can use their engine. They have already been disqualified because of using outside assistance.

This is going to be a short update. I was asked to write an OGR article for a major American magazine and I did so on Monday but when I got up Tuesday morning it was gone. The deadline was today so I wrote it a second time and that used up my creative energy. But I wanted to acknowledge some of the Facebook comments that I got in regards to my post yesterday about kindness and humanity. This was one from Mark Daniels (sorry Mark I couldn’t contact you to see if was ok to post this but I guess once in Facebookland it’s okay). Marks post really captured the essence of my post and the spirit of this great adventure. Here it is.

“Loved your comments Mr Brian Hancock, having just had my first OGR2023 experience I could see first hand that for a boat to really work we need to be kind to one another. By helping your crew mates, the watch becomes a team, two teams and the boat sings too and with you. Apply the same on shore and we are all doing our part for the next leg but in doing so we all feel good. Nothing to be frightened of just ‘being’ human. Does also help if you have someone as special as Capt. Coconut.”

Tapio Lehtinen Sailing posted a link to that hauntingly beautiful song by John Lennon – “Imagine.” YouTube it and watch. Meanwhile good luck Translated 9. Safe sailing to Punta…
